Justin Gaethje, five years after losing to Dustin Poirier in their first encounter, got his revenge by finishing him with a head kick at UFC 291.

The crowd was in full force at Salt Lake City’s Delta Center from the opening fight of the evening between Miranda Maverick vs Priscila Cacheiro. And the energy increased in the arena as the main event drew nearer. The main card featured some impressive finishes, and even a few standout performances. But everything culminated in the second fight between two of sport’s most exciting fighters.

Both fighters were able to get into a rhythm and have moments of success. Gaethje’s low kicks proved to be particularly effective right from the beginning of the fight. Poirier, on the other hand, also delivered enough strikes himself to keep the fans on edge throughout the first frame.

In 2018, the fight between the two lightweights went to the fourth-round. But Gaethje ended their second encounter much faster, by kicking Poirier in the head with a clean kick just one minute into the round.

The brutal knockout not only avenged a TKO defeat from his first fight against Poirier but also crowned him as the UFC BMF champion. He could now meet the winner of the lightweight title fight between Islam Makhachev vs Charles Oliveira.
